How to Make Two Miis Fall in Love
A step-by-step method: pick a compatible pair, stack the affection score with food and proximity, then handle the confession and proposal minigame.
Tomodachi Life relationships run on a hidden affection score, and the score only goes up when two Miis spend time together. You can't force love with a button, but you can stack the odds hard in your favor. These seven steps cover everything from picking the right pair to winning the proposal minigame. If you just want the short version: move their apartments close, feed them their favorite foods at shared meals, and be patient. Everything else accelerates that core loop.
Step 1: Pick Two Miis With Decent Compatibility
Before you do any work, check whether the two Miis you want to pair actually have a chance. The game tags every potential couple as great, okay, or poor based partly on their personality groups. You can find this out by watching how they interact when they first meet: a great match will warm up fast, a poor match will stall or argue.
You're not locked out of poor-chemistry pairings, they just take more effort. If you're set on two Miis whose personalities clash, you can still get them together with patience and food. But if you just want a couple to form without a fight, pick two Miis whose groups mesh. The relationships guide covers which groups pair well.
A quick rule of thumb: same-group pairings and Considerate-with-Reserved pairings are the easiest. Cross-group pairings like Outgoing-with-Ambitious are exciting but louder. Considerate-with-Outgoing is the hardest and needs the most babysitting.
Step 2: Move Their Apartments Next to Each Other
Proximity is the most underrated lever in the whole game. Miis bump into their neighbors far more often than Miis on the other side of the floor, and every bump is a chance for affection to tick up. If your two targets live across the island from each other, they might go days without a meaningful interaction.
Use the apartment editor to place their doors close together. You don't need them literally adjacent, but within a few doors makes a real difference. Once they're neighbors, you'll start seeing them wander into each other's cutscenes, share meals, and show up in the same dream sequences without you doing anything.
This step alone has pushed my slow-burn couples from strangers to dating faster than any gift I ever gave. It's free, it takes ten seconds, and it keeps working while you're offline.
Step 3: Feed Them Their Favorite Foods Together
This is the big one. Favorite foods give the largest single affection boost in the game, and sharing a meal applies that boost to both Miis at once. If you want two Miis to fall in love fast, find out what each one loves and serve it to them at the same table as often as the game lets you.
You won't know a Mii's favorites until they've tried the food, so early on you're feeding blind. Feed in small portions, watch the reaction, and write down every super favorite and normal favorite you discover. Once you have the list, invite both Miis over and serve the dish.
I've taken couples from zero affection to a confession in a few in-game days just by repeating their super favorites at shared meals. It feels like cheating, but it's just how the affection math works. Food is the engine of every relationship on the island.
Step 4: Give Gifts That Stick
Gifts are the second tier of affection boosting. The trick is that a gift works best when the recipient actually uses or displays it, so pay attention to what a Mii does with what you hand them. A gift that sits in inventory does nothing. A gift they interact with gives a steady mood bump that carries into their next interaction with your target partner.
The most effective gifts are the ones a Mii specifically asks for. When a thought bubble pops up asking for an item, that's a high-value request, and fulfilling it gives a bigger boost than a random present. Watch for those bubbles and prioritize them.
Don't spam gifts. A few well-chosen ones land harder than a pile of random items, and you'll save your in-game cash for the interiors and foods that move the needle more reliably.
Step 5: Force Shared Activities
Anytime two Miis do something together, affection ticks up. Group events, trips, minigames, even just hanging out in the same apartment all count. If your two targets aren't naturally crossing paths, drag them into the same activity manually.
The cafe is a good spot because it pulls multiple Miis into one location. So are the amusement park and the beach once they unlock. Invite both targets to the same outing whenever the game offers it, and you'll stack affection gains on top of the food and gift work you're already doing.
Tomodachi Quest, the battle minigame at the cafe, also helps. Putting both Miis in the same party counts as shared activity time, and the post-quest celebration scene can trigger relationship events. It's not the fastest method, but it's fun and it contributes.
Step 6: Handle the Confession
Once affection gets high enough, one of the Miis will want to confess their feelings. The game will prompt you with a thought bubble, and you'll get to coach them through it: pick the location, pick the words, and hope the target says yes.
The confession can fail even with high affection, especially for poor-chemistry couples. If it fails, don't panic. Affection is still high, and the Mii will usually try again after a few in-game days. Keep feeding and gifting in the meantime, and the next attempt has a better shot.
Pick the confession setting carefully. A location the target Mii likes gives a small bonus. The words and timing also matter, but the game's hints during the scene will guide you. Save before the confession if you want to retry without waiting.
Step 7: Win the Proposal Minigame
After dating for a while, one Mii will want to propose. This triggers a timed minigame where you have to tap or pick the right moment while their partner is in a romantic mood. The mood shows in the background color and the partner's expression, and you get a limited window to land the proposal.
Poor-chemistry couples fail this minigame more often because their mood swings harder and the windows shrink. If your couple keeps botching the proposal, it usually means their affection is high but their compatibility tag is weak. The fix is to keep pushing affection even higher so the next attempt lands.
Once the proposal succeeds, they marry at the chapel, move in together, and can have a baby. Marriage is mostly permanent in this game, so treat the proposal as the moment your matchmaking effort pays off. For the long version of what happens after, see the relationships guide.
Once they're married, the game opens up baby Miis, travel, and long-term household stories. For which personalities pair best and how compatibility actually works, read the relationships guide. To find a Mii's type before you pair them, use the personality calculator.
