Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions about the Tomodachi Life personality chart, the calculator, compatibility, and how the two game versions differ. Want more detail? Each answer links to the full guide.

How does the Tomodachi Life personality chart work?

The chart is a 4×4 grid. Four sliders set during Mii creation decide where a Mii lands: Movement, Speech, Energy, and Attitude, each from 1 to 8. The game adds Movement and Speech to pick the column, and Energy and Attitude to pick the row. Where the column and row meet is one of 16 personality types. The Overall slider has no effect on personality; it only changes a few cosmetic animations.

How do I find my Mii's personality type?

You can use the calculator on the homepage. Enter the four slider values you picked when you created the Mii and the calculator returns the type. If you do not remember the values, you can also work backward: open the full chart, find the type whose description matches your Mii, and read its slider recipe on that type's detail page.

What do the four personality sliders actually do?

Movement (Slow to Quick) sets walk speed and is the only slider with a clearly visible effect during normal play. Speech (Polite to Direct), Energy (Flat to Intense), and Attitude (Serious to Relaxed) feed into the personality calculation and shape idle animations, speech bubbles, and apartment style. The Overall slider (Normal to Quirky) is cosmetic only.

Can I change a Mii's personality after creating it?

No. Once a Mii is created its personality is locked for the life of that save file. There is no edit option, no personality-change item, and no way to reroll it. The only option is to delete the Mii and recreate it from scratch, which wipes its friendships, relationships, and level. If you want to experiment, do it early before your Miis build up history.

What is the difference between the 3DS and Living the Dream personality charts?

The chart itself is identical on both versions. What changed is mostly the names: many types were renamed for the Switch release. For example, Softie became Sweetie, Brainiac became Rogue, and Leader became Dynamo in the US version. Living the Dream also adds a color palette system tied to personality groups, fixes the Overall slider direction (which was reversed on 3DS), and makes personality affect how well a Mii can cheer up sad islanders.

Why are the personality names different in the US and EU versions?

Nintendo localizes the game through separate regional offices, mainly Nintendo of America and Nintendo of Europe. Each office picks names it thinks land better with its own audience, and they do not have to agree. Marketing tests and trademark checks also force swaps in some regions. The underlying chart and personality types are the same everywhere, only the labels differ.

Which personality types get along best?

Same-group pairings (two Considerate Miis, two Reserved Miis, and so on) tend to bond smoothly because they share a similar outlook. Cross-group pairings like Considerate plus Reserved or Outgoing plus Ambitious often produce the most interesting friendships. High-energy types like Go-Getter and Dynamo can overwhelm quieter types like Observer and Thinker. That said, personality is only one factor in compatibility; food, gifts, and time spent together matter at least as much over a long playthrough.

Does personality affect Tomodachi Quest battles?

Yes. Each personality type leans toward different behavior in the Tomodachi Quest minigame. Considerate types like Sweetie and Buddy tend to heal and defend, keeping the party alive. Ambitious and Outgoing types like Dynamo, Maverick, and Go-Getter attack aggressively and take risks. Reserved types like Observer and Thinker play carefully and pick their moments. The exact behavior can vary, but the tendencies line up with the personality descriptions.

What is the easiest way to get a specific personality type?

Use the slider recipes guide. It lists ready-to-use Movement, Speech, Energy, and Attitude values for all 16 types. Plug the values into the calculator first to confirm the result, then enter them during Mii creation. Keep in mind the sliders run 1 to 8 (not 0 to 7), and a sum landing exactly on a group cutoff is the lowest value of the higher group, not the top of the lower one.
